One of my first ever paintings, based off of a sculpture I saw in Paris. I wanted the creature’s stare to transfix the viewer, so it’s sunk into a frame that juts out about 2 inches from the surface of the painting, with a black spiral wrapping around every side, leading inward. This frame acts as a 3-dimensional complement to the painting itself which funnels your gaze towards its inscrutably black eyes, rendered deep and wavy by many, many layers of varnish.
The creature does frighten me however, and sometimes, after looking at it, I feel subconsciously compelled to walk into the ocean and drown. Bummer!
