One of my first ever paintings, based off of a sculpture I saw in Paris. I wanted the creature’s stare to transfix the viewer, so it’s sunk into a frame that juts out about 2 inches from the surface of the painting, with a black spiral wrapping around every side. This frame acts as a 3-dimensional complement to the painting itself which funnels your gaze towards its inscrutably black eyes, rendered deep and wavy by a hilarious amount of varnish. It took a while to apply all those layers, but I think the effect was worth it! The creature does frighten me however, and sometimes I feel like it’s subconsciously encouraging me to walk into the ocean. Bummer!
