Keeping with my theme of painting frightening creatures, it was only a matter of time before I painted the feisty, ill-mannered antagonist of Creature from the Black Lagoon. I just dig his vibe – or maybe dive it? (Sorry.) I wanted to create what is essentially the kind of painting you’d see at your grandfather’s house near his bourbon, but with a little something extra. To that end, the lighthouse and red oak frame does a lot of the heavy lifting. I also wanted to explore water/spotlight interplay at night, patterns in waves, and the murky, muddy, purple and teal transitions between water and land at night.

One unique aspect of this painting is that it was developed in two stages: as you can see in the original post I made in August, I have added some highlights and details since then. Frankly, this is because I was unhappy with how monochromatic it turned out, and so I did another round of painting on top of the varnished surface, and then varnished it yet again; because of this, some details appear to “float” a bit – I was initially worried about this, but after carefully reworking the varnish until it was just right, I think the effect actually strengthens the piece!
